Nathan Brock
Senior Character Artist
Nathan is a Senior Character Artist living in Carlsbad, CA. He graduated Savannah College of Art and Design in 2004, with a BFA in Computer Art. With over 13 years of experience he has worked on a range of games including mmo’s, mobile, and first person shooters. Works include titles such as Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Defiance, and Arkane’s newest title Prey.

Course Description

This class will focus on creating high resolution textures and shaders to bring your character to life. The texturing specifically will focus on the character bust, pin-pointing major detail areas such as the facial skin, eyes, teeth, lips and ears. You will also be focusing on the more difficult and intricate portions of texturing, such as skin details, man-made materials and hair/fur.

Course Outline


Core themes and major groups of the upper body

  • Basic information on shaders, materials, lighting and physically-based rendering nomenclature and techniques
  • Initial steps of photo projection painting in Mudbox
  • First pass at texturing a head with photos


Creation of additional maps for creating a realistic head

  • Ambient occlusion, gloss, fuzz, and transmission
  • Methods for creating a final image
  • Post-processing methods to add realism to an image


DDO, Substance Designer and Marmoset toolkit strategies for prop design

  • Texturing basics of a prop
  • Normal map baking functions and how to create normal maps
  • Introduction of DDO and Substance Designer
  • Texture asset in DDO, put maps together in Marmoset for presentation


Hand painted fundamentals creature assets

  • Basic color theory and color schemes
  • Hand paint asset in Mudbox
  • Output a variety of textures to create a final rendered image
