Bryan Wynia
Senior Character Artist
Bryan is currently working as a Senior Character Artist at id Software. Previously he worked at Sony Santa Monica and Naughty Dog, where he contributed to God of War: Ascension and the Uncharted series. He has also worked as a freelance Creature Designer and Sculptor for the film,game, and toy industries. Some of his clients include, Respawn Entertainment, Legacy Effects, Jim Henson's Creature Shop, VVDFX, and The Aaron Sims Company.

Course Description

Over the course of 8 weeks students will learn the process of designing creatures for films and games. Starting with a simple idea, gathering reference, sketching, concept sculpting, painting, and presentation. Not only will they learn the creative process but the thought process behind what makes for a memorable and effective design. At the end of the course students will have brought to life to 2 unique creatures.

A sketchbook, Markers, Pen, Pencil, Photoshop, Zbrush, Keyshot

Course Outline

Wk1

Studies & Reference

- Sculpt 2 studies using a theropod or an amphibian as reference.

- Creature 1 into: Science Ficton creature bust

- Gather reference for creature number

Wk2

Sketches & Exploration

- Using your reference create multiple sketches of your creature

- Intro to dynamesh

- Using dynamesh begin to block out a bust of your creature

Wk3

Primary & secondary shapes | Part 1

- Focus on sculpting the “big picture” of your creature

- Refine the secondary form and overall character of your design

- Using Best Preview Render create a paint over to help expand your design

Wk4

Primary & secondary shapes | Part 2

- Focus on sculpting the “big picture” of your creature

- Refine the secondary form and overall character of your design

- Using Best Preview Render create a paint over to help expand your design

Wk5

Polypaint & Rendering

- Using polypaint introduce color to your creature

- Render and finalize your design using Zbrush and Photoshop

- Creature 2 intro: Fantasy/ mythology creature

Wk6

Creature 2 Intro

- Gather reference for your creature

- Create multiple sketches to explore your design

- Begin to block out your creature using Zbrush

Form & Function | Part 1

- Refine the secondary forms of your creature

- Create a simple paintover of your creature to explore various design paths

- Begin to explore color options

Form & Function | Part 2

- Refine the secondary forms of your creature

- Create a simple paintover of your creature to explore various design paths

- Begin to explore color options

Wk9

Rendering

- Complete your sculpture using various alphas and texture

- Using Keyshot or Zbrush render your design

- Comoposite your render passes in photoshop

Wk10

Presenting Your Design

- Using Keyshot create a grey scale turnaround of your design maquette

- Complete your final image using your previous renders
